the Grant Amherst Mural Project

This mural project is based around all aspects the Black Rock community: to honor the histories and heritage that have been grounded in the area for centuries, and also to acknowledge and celebrate the current business and arts community that has taken hold in the past decade. This project is the brainchild of Marcus L. Wise of 464 Gallery and Marissa Lehner, both members of the Emerging Leaders in the Arts (Buffalo chapter). Both have a passion to bring art into the local community. The Grant-Amherst Business Association, 464 Gallery and ELAB are co-sponsors of the project.

The design of the mural will include a tree: a metaphor for change over time, history and growth. Important landmarks such as the Scajaquada Creek, the long gone "Black Rock" for which the area was named, and Lake Erie will also be included. Where a large part of the mural will be dedicated to the natural elements of the area, the leaves of the trees will be in fact be created by community members themselves. This is your chance to share why you call this place home. Is it the architecture? or perhaps a weekly event where you can spend time with your neighbors? The leaves will be made out of wood, and all community members; businesses and organizations are invited to paint one during the weekends this summer. This is your opportunity to have a voice, say what is meaningful to you, and have it become a part of the great histories of Black Rock.

Join us on one of these days, 11-4 to help paint or watch the mural come to life!
